My heart sank when I saw Phil walking toward me in the cafeteria. The winter dance was two weeks away and rumor (谣传) had it that Phil wanted to ask me out. With an irregular face and the 16 to use the word "cool" a few hundred times a day, Phil was 17 but the man of my dreams.
"Hi, Christy," he said, sweat forming on his head, "Uhhh, I was wondering if you'd like to go to the winter dance with me. I think it would be cool." Bobby Moresco grew up in New York's Hell's Kitchen, a tough working-class neighborhood on Manhattan's West Side. But Hell's Kitchen lies right next door to Broadway, and the bright lights attracted Bobby from the time he was a teen. Being stagestruck was hardly what a street kid could admit to his buddies. Fearing being laughed at, he told no one, when he started taking acting lessons at age 17. If you were a kid from the neighborhood, you became a cop, construction worker, porter or criminal. Not an actor.
Moresco struggled to make that long walk a few blocks east. He studied acting, turned out for all the cattle calls (临时演员的招募) and during the decade of the 1970s made a total of $2,000. "I wasn't a good actor, but I had a driving need to do something different with my life." he says.
He moved to Hollywood, where he drove a cab and worked in a bar in the night. "My father said, 'Stop this craziness and get a job; you have a wife and daughter.'" But Moresco kept working at his chosen craft.
Then in 1983 his younger brother Thomas was murdered in one of mob-linked killings (黑帮火并). Moresco moved back to his old neighborhood and started writing as a way to explore the pain of Hell's Kitchen. Half-Deserted Streets, based on his brother's killing, opened at a small Off-Broadway theater in 1988. A Hollywood producer saw it and asked him to work on a screenplay.
His reputation grew, and he got enough assignments to move back to Hollywood. By 2003, he was again out of work and out of cash when he got a call from Paul Haggis, a director who had befriended him. Haggis wanted help writing a film about the country after September 11. The two worked on the script, but every studio in town turned it down. They kept selling it. Studio administrators, however, thought no one wanted to see an honest vision of race and fear and lives in conflict in modern America.
Moresco believed so strongly in the script that he borrowed money, and sold his house. He and Haggis kept pushing. At last the writers found an independent film producer who would take a chance, but the upfront money was so little, Moresco delayed his salary.
Crash slipped into the theaters in May 2005, and quietly became both a big hit and a critical success. It was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three–Best Picture, Best Film Editing and Best Writing (Original Screenplay) by Paul Haggis and the kid from Hell's Kitchen.
At age 54, Bobby Moresco became an overnight success. "If you have something you want to do in life, don't think about the problems," he says, "think about the ways to get it done."

There was once a beautiful nymph called Echo. Echo had one failing, she was fond of talking and whether in a chat, a discussion or an argument she always wanted the last word. As she was good company, she and Zeus became good friends. However, Zeus' wife, Hera, became jealous. She followed Zeus to earth to find out what he was doing and Zeus asked Echo to distract Hera until he could escape. Later when Hera discovered she had been tricked, she became very angry. She turned on Echo and said, "You shall lose the use of your tongue because you cheated me. You'll have the last word, but no longer have the power to speak first." So from that moment on, beautiful Echo was hardly able to hold a conversation because she could only repeat the words of those around her. She became very embarrassed and hid herself deep in the woods.
One day a handsome young man called Narcissus came into the woods. He had been hunting deer and lost his way. However, the moment Echo saw him, she fell in love with him. She followed him, wishing to tell him but unable to begin a conversation. Oh, how she wished she could speak first! Unfortunately, Narcissus was far too busy worrying about where his companions might be and how he could find his way home.
Eventually Narcissus, with Echo following along behind, came to a pool of water in the middle of the woods. Feeling thirsty, Narcissus bent down to drink. As he did so, he saw a beautiful creature in the water staring up at him. He immediately bent over and said to him, "I love you." Echo, nearby, and seeing her chance immediately responded "… love you." But it was too late. Narcissus was already in love with himself.
The stranger seemed to rise up closer to Narcissus who was so involved that he entirely failed to notice Echo; "I want to stay; and look at this beautiful sight forever," he whispered dreamily to himself. "… Forever," repeated Echo sadly. "Come here," called Narcissus to his reflection as he moved his head and the creature seemed to move away. "… Here" responded Echo. Narcissus bent back down to see his reflection more clearly. "So beautiful! I've never seen anything so beautiful!" "… So beautiful!" responded Echo truthfully.
Narcissus remained by the water refusing all Echo's silent offers of food and drink until he died. Where he had been, a flower grew in his place, as beautiful as Narcissus himself. As for Echo, from that time forward she also did not eat or drink till she turned to rocks and all that was left was her voice. Even now you can still hear Echo trying to attract Narcissus' attention by repeating his words and still see Narcissus as a beautiful flowed growing near a pool.

In business, there's a speed difference: It's the difference between how important a firm's leaders say speed is to their competitive (竞争的) strategy (策略) and how fast the company actually moves. The difference is important regardless of industry and company size. Companies fearful of losing their competitive advantage spend much time and money looking for ways to pick up the speed.
In our study of 343 businesses, the companies that chose to go, go, go to try to gain an edge ended up with lower sales and operating incomes than those that paused at key moments to make sure they were on the right track. What's more, the firms that "slowed down to speed up" improved their top and bottom lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher operating incomes over a three-year period.
How did they disobey the laws of business physics, taking more time than competitors yet performing better? They thought differently about what "slower" and "faster" mean. Firms sometimes fail to understand the difference between operational speed (moving quickly) and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes to deliver value). Simply increasing the speed of production, for example, may be one way to try to reduce the speed difference. But that often leads to reduced value over time, in the form of lower-quality products and services.
In our study, higher-performing companies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became more open to ideas and discussion. They encouraged new ways of thinking. And they allowed time to look back and learn. By contrast (相比而言), performance suffered at firms that moved fast all the time, paid too much attention to improving efficiency, stuck to tested methods, didn't develop team spirit among their employees, and had little time thinking about changes.
Strategic speed serves at a kind of leadership. Teams that regularly take time to get things right, rather than plough ahead full bore, are more successful in meeting their business goals. That kind of strategy must come from the top.
47. What does the underlined part "gain an edge" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Increase the speed. B. Get an advantage.
C. Reach the limit. D. Set a goal.
48. The underlined part "the laws of business physics" in Paragraph 3 means .
A. spending more time and performing worse
B. spending more time and performing better
C. spending less time and performing worse
D. spending less time and performing better
49. What can we learn from the text?
A. How fast a firm moves depends on how big it is.
B. How competitive a firm is depends on what it produces.
C. Firms guided by strategic speed take time to make necessary changes.
D. Firms guided by operational speed take time to develop necessary team spirit.
50. Which could be the best title for the text?
A. Improve quality? Serve better. B. Deliver value? Plough ahead.
C. Reduce time? Move faster. D. Need speed? Slow down.

Just like your kid needs to be taught how to speak, walk and eat, he/she needs to be taught how to behave when dining out. To make your family dinner outings more fun and less stressful, first of all, you need to choose the right restaurant. So you should plan the outing well in advance. Don't restrict yourself to kid-friendly restaurants. Unless you expose your kids to different places, they aren't going to learn how to handle themselves there. Call ahead of time and ask for things kids need for dinner outing, and if possible, make reservations.
As a parent, you know your children's routine well, try not to interrupt it when you plan a dinner outing. If your children behave better during the day, take them out for lunch. For a dinner outing with kids, arrive at the restaurant early. The ideal time to take kids out for dinner is 5 to 5:30 p.m. The reason is that it is before the rush hour at restaurants. This means that you'll be able to sit where you want to, and the service will be quicker and that the restaurant staff will have a little free time, which means they will be more helpful.
When you arrive at the restaurant, choose seats wisely. Sitting in a booth (包间) or on a corner seat near an exit is recommended because you or your kids will not get in the way of the hotel staff and other customers. Choose your seat near an exit so that you can take him/her out for a short walk while waiting for the food to arrive. An added benefit of this arrangement is that you'll find it less embarrassing to make a quick exit if your kid refuses to calm down and you are forced to leave the dinner half way.
Keeping your kids busy is also a good idea. In the beginning, your kids will be busy taking in the new atmosphere and will be quiet for some time. Once the kids have become acquainted with the surroundings, they'll become fidgety (不安的). Give them a little freedom to look around or walk in the hall, as long as it doesn't disturb others. After some time, bring out the "restaurant games" you brought along. Make sure to keep the noise levels in control all the while and see that their behavior isn't inappropriate for an outsider. Another thing to keep in mind is to include kids in a conversation. Use this time to strengthen your relationship and create lifetime memories.
While you're placing an order, don't order food for your kids before yours. If the kids finish their food before your food arrives, they'll want to leave before you finish yours. Discussing how to make a particular dish is a nice way of giving an impromptu (即兴的) food education without causing boredom. Encourage questions and opinions to keep the dinner table conversation on, and their interest alive.
